A teenager was killed when she slipped and fell onto a live railway line while out walking with friends.

The 18-year-old was walking along the line between Eastleigh and Allington Bridge in Hampshire when the accident happened in the early hours of Sunday. British Transport Police said she had been among a group of six who stopped to light a cigarette.

The teenager's friends tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A police spokesman said: "This appears to be a tragic accident but highlights the dangers of trespassing on the railways." A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Tuesday.
