I was wondering if any photographers who know the G&WR well could advise me if this location requires a lineside pass?

If so is there a variation on this shot that can be taken publicly from the fence line? I have never been here before but the cutting looks deep and with some trees so I was thinking perhaps you can't see the line from what looks like a nearby footpath? (going off OS Maps)

    Thanks in advance!

You can shoot off the road bridge , but that vantage point is via lineside pass, The path across the field for recollection is no help and from the fence is constrained as you don't get a clear view of the track

    Martin is spot on.

The bridge is no good for video - too many passing cars.

Thanks for the advice, is the bridge a popular spot? Is there a link to an example of the public version of the shot?

I believe lineside passes are available from Toddington but it's 2 years since I visited the line and actually had one; perhaps others have more recent advice.

This is from the bridge. You can play about with focal length and take the shop before or after the signal. DSCF1312.JPG

The bridge is popular with me. Can't speak for others. The lineside pass shot is better though.

A lineside pass is avaliable from Toddington. From memory, annual membership and a 1 day member pass is cheaper than a 1 day non-member pass. And you get all the perks of a years membership. You can also get an annual members pass.

I used to have a pass, but tend to go elsewhere now. Not sure why! The pass is good value, and opens up loads of good shots between Toddington and Winchcombe.

Thanks for all the info. The lineside pass isn't really worth it this time, because we will only be stopping in during the Christmas Diesel Day for a 1-2 hour lunchtime stop on the way to somewhere else. I'm lucky to be visiting at all to be honest!

Great line though, so will be back, possibly for a summer gala. Will certainly consider the lineside option in the future...

That photo was taken by a linesider. You can take pictures from the road but it's a less attractive viewpoint. I would support the comments earlier about traffic noise for the moviemaker.

Not a dig at you, just a general reminder....

If you don't buy a lineside pass please find some other way to contribute to the railway. Putting on the show costs, even if you are only there for an hour or so! The phrase "worth it" needs to be taken in the wider context.

Personally I always get a lineside pass and a rover-type ticket if I go snapping at a gala.

    Neil.

No worries. One of the reasons for my enquiry was looking into nice shots close by to a station, because we intend to stop off at Winchcombe Station where we will be able to make such contributions.

I presume a suitable donation to the Landslip Appeal at Winchcombe (plus a round of teas/coffees/biscuits :)) would not offend?

I'm not sure that you can buy a daily lineside pass excepting at galas. When I had an annual pass for this railway it took some weeks to come in the post. If you want a daily pass it might be worth your while to give them a call.

There are many locations on the G/WR that don't need a pass, but the one that you particularly want does need one.

    Regards

As mentioned by the previous poster there are a large number of locations on the GWSR which do not require a lineside pass. Totally-transport.co.uk (formerly RASDV) have created a lineside guide to the railway complete with example photos and a handy map. Take a look here if you wish

http://gwsr.com/enthusiasts/lineside-passes.aspx suggests you can buy a one-day or annual pass.
