Grand opening for Gurgaon Metro

Gurgaon’s new privately-funded automated metro system has begun full revenue service.

The system, which is served by five three-car trains, connects ‘Gurgaon Cyber City’ – the city’s commercial centre – to New Delhi’s metro network.

Earlier in the year, funding was approved to extend the line south – a project that will be undertaken by Siemens and should be complete by the end of 2015.

Both phase one, which and the planned extension have been funded by IL&FS Rail – a subsidiary of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS).

Sanjiv Rai, chief executive of IL&FS Rail, said: “The aim of building the metro network was not only to provide easy access to inter-city commuters but also provide a world class transport system to the residents of the Millennium City.”

The initial six-kilometre has cost 1,088 crore (€128 million) to build. Much of the work has been done by Siemens, which as well as supplying the rolling stock, installed the electrification and S&T systems.

Around 30,000 passengers are expected to use the Gurgaon Metro every hour.
