As I write, the Steam Railway magazine gricers should be en route from Aberystwyth to Tywyn for the last leg of the first day of their attempt to travel on all Wales' narrow gauge lines in three days (or in 51 hours if you prefer). Tomorrow morning we will welcome them (and their car, the 1951 Bentley Mark VI formerly owned by Ivo Peters) to Maespoeth at 08:00 for a trip to Corris and back before they head off to Llanfair Caereinion.

In case anyone doesn't know, they are raising funds for a new boiler for Talyllyn No.2 "Dolgoch", so that the "Old Lady" will be able to steam again in 2011 and take part in the 60th anniversary of the first train to be run on a preserved railway - which, of course, she hauled.

More details, and how to donate, are in the current issue of SR (August 21-September 17).

No I do not currently volunteer
Saw the last train of the say pulling into Aberystwyth this afternoon with a Steam Railway headboard on and wondered what it was for. What have they done today then - VoR, Teifi Valley and Talyllyn?

Monday - Brecon, Teifi, Rheidol, Talyllyn
Tuesday - Corris, W&L, Bala, Ffezzy, WHHR, WHR
    Wednesday - Snowdon, Llanberis, Fairbourne

We welcomed them to Maespoeth this morning and set off at 08:00 with a special train formation, took lots of photos at Corris with the Bentley and the train, and then sent them off on the mountain road via Aberangell towards Llanfair Caereinion.

Anyone know whether the team managed all the railways in the 3 days?

Photos of the Corris leg can now be seen at www.corris.co.uk

I gather they managed to complete the Grice successfully, although the Llanfair-Llanuwchllyn leg was made with seconds to spare !

No doubt the next issue of Steam Railway will have all the details.
