There is to be a GBVI which it is proposed wil cover more of Wales than previous ones but will still circumnavigate Britain. However details are not finalised.

Wasn't there talk of it going through the midlands aswell?
Would be nice if it could run Manchester to sheffield via the hope valley!

How about a recreation of the Cambrian Coast Express? Perhaps a standard of some kind from Aberystwyth/Pwllheli - Shrewsbury then loco change for a Castle or King to Wolves, Stourbridge jct via Old Hill bank, Kiddy, Worcester, Gloucester, London termini (preferably Padd)?

    I can dream!

    The Great Britain V - 2012

Speculation beginning, but to add in variety ( and also complete guesses at locos ) :

    Day 1 : London Paddington - Bristol ( 5043 )
    Day 2 : Bristol - Penzance - Bristol ( 34067 & 34046 )
    Day 3 : Bristol - Cardiff - Barry - Camarthen ( 5029 )
    Day 4 : Camarthen Llandindod Wells - Shrewsbury - Chester ( 45407 + 44871 )
Day 5 : Chester - Llandudno Jct ( train splits, one to Bleneau, other to Holyhead. Passengers are conveyed between by coach, WHR/FR ) - Chester ( 45407 + 44871 )
    Day 6 : Chester - Warrington - Shap - Beattock - Glasgow ( 46233 )
    Day 7 : Glasgow - Stirling - Perth - Inverness ( 61994 + 62005 )
    Day 8 : Inverness - Aberdeen - Dundee - Edinburgh ( 60009 )
    Day 9 : Edinburgh - York ( 60019 ), York - London Kings Cross ( 60103 ).

I know, probably routing and locos are way off the mark. But I suspect this could be a good way to convey more lines in Wales while keeping it an actual Great Britain tour?

Sounds pretty decent to me. I'd be tempted to make a couple of changes in the motive power dept though. Maybe 6023 on day one, 5029 & 5043 on day two. Two Castles over the Tamar sounds pretty good to me.

I don't think you'll be too far out with the Welsh routing to be honest, its not like there are many options to choose from unless you do something daft like go to Rhymney or a similar dead end.

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012

Nice idea That - not a bad itinerary at all!

But you can probably kiss goodbye to any Starts/finishes from/to Paddington as next year sees Notwork rail begin stringing the wires up along the GWML which is going to cause havoc with the service trains nevermind any charters, I guess we wont be seeing many if any steam charters out of there for quite a few years - so your starting point would either be Euston, up the WCML and branch off somewhere, or more probably Waterloo/Victoria with a meandering trip to Bristol!

Oh and don't forget to roster the Blue King with the castle for the first leg & maybe 60103+60163 for the final leg!!!!

    Re: The Great Britain V - 2012

According to Down Main in the latest Steam Railway that works starts Easter 2013 ( Easter Monday is 1st April). It mentions avoiding the whole GWML. The first 12 or so miles are already wired.

    My suggested itinerary : -

    Day 1 : London Paddington - Newbury - Penzance 70013 ( or 70000) and 5029 ( or 6023). 5029 to come off at Par due to Gauging.
    Day 2 : Penzance - Cardiff 70013 ( or 70000) and 5029 ( or 6023).
    Day 3 : Cardiff - Llandindod Wells - Shrewsbury - Chester - Llandudno.45407 + 44871. top and tail from Chester.
    Day 4 : Llandudno - Preston 45407 + 44871. Preston - Hellifield -Beattock - Glasgow ( 46233 )
Days 5 -9 the reverse of days 1-5 this year. Steam hauled all the way.

Yes, quite agreed there is no direct route from Swansea onto the Central Wales line. One option maybe that the two fives will run LE's the short distance to turn on the Morlais Jns - Hendy Jn triangle while the train waits at Llanelli. There are holding loops between Llanelli station and Llendello Jn. I am sure someone has the plans in hand. I don't know if there are plans to re-instate turning faciliites at Aberdeen, the Edinburgh / Glasgow - Aberdeen itinerary out and back over the bridges has been considered and subsequently abandoned previously, due to lack of turning facilities at Aberdeen.

Edinburgh - Aberdeen and return - Steam Dreams are also advertising a trip with 60009 next June.

Is this the first GB trip not to list 6100 in the itiniery... I'd take that as an omen that it may now show up :)

Sooner have 48151 on the Central Wales leg, 8F's have gone south but we've never had an 8F going north since 1964.

    Cheers Dave

So would I. Its one those missing workings which is quite doable but which has never been done and of course is wholly authentic, though I'm not sure if an 8F unassisted would shift load 12 over Central Wales these days. I expect WCRC would pull out all the stops to make such an event happen as they would be keen to see how their 8F performs working north.
