Latest updates on GWR 28xx 2857 available on here. Will try and answer as many questions as is reasonably possibly from the Society stance. If you want to know “When is it going to be started/outshopped, what colour is it going to be”, we don’t know!

Welcome Harry! This is a loco I hope will be returned to action sooner rather than later, but in the meantime is it undercover? I was a little sad to see at my last visit that both retirees from last year (2857 & 1501) were both outside, seemingly where their fires were dropped.
2857 is a fantastic loco - strong, economical, noisy(!) & seemingly in as good as condition upon withdrawal than when it was restored. I hope some positive decisions can be made soon. Perhaps the EMF are showing the way?

I think Harry means he will post on this thread when he has updates, that's how I interpeted it anyway!

So currently 2857 is stored in Kidderminster carriage shed as the Engine House at Highley is full. We have held some initial discussions with the SVR as to the medium to long term plan and they have been positive on the whole but so far there is nothing to note.

It has been on display twice since it came out of ticket and moved to Kidderminster at both the Spring Gala and 1940s event, these were pre-arranged appearances in conjunction with the Society.

When we are in possession of any developments we will be sure to pass them on to our supporters

12 years ago today, 2857 headed out on her first revenue earning service of her most recent boiler ticket. Doubleheaded with 4566, she made a welcome return to traffic. 12 years on The Society are now making plans on how we can return 2857 to traffic again, and it is very likely that an overhaul appeal will be launched in the not too distant future.

But for now you can help The Society fundraise for that next overhaul by visiting one of the following links -
    - Visit our Etsy shop and purchase some 2857 Society products - https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/2857Society
    - Visit one of our members eBay page and purchase any of the books, with all proceeds being donated to The Society - https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/hbkwvr.123_6
    - Visit our website and become a member of the Society - http://2857.org.uk/2857_membership.html
    - You can donate to The Society and you can find out more on how to do so by emailing - harry.bradley@svrlive.com

Please do consider helping us out as we are going to need a significant sum of money to enable us to return 2857 to traffic.

JOINT PRESS RELEASE – issued by the EMF and the 2857 Society on 27 August 2024
TENDER AGREEMENT ANNOUNCED BETWEEN THE EMF and THE 2857 SOCIETY

An agreement has been made between the Erlestoke Manor Fund and the 2857 Society for the tender of ex GWR 2-8-0 no 2857 to be attached to the EMF’s ex GWR 4-6-0 7802 Bradley Manor for a period of 12-15 months, upon the latter’s anticipated return to service later this year after a major overhaul.

Harry Bradley, Chairman of the 2857 Society, comments on “the good working relationship between both parties over many years“ and that the “arrangement is mutually beneficial”, with 2857 currently out of service until well after 7802’s return.

Adrian Hassell, Chair of the EMF, says “The 4000 Gallon tender, which has long been partnered with 7802, is in need of expenditure and repairs to ready it for further service. This would divert resources from the current focus of returning 7802 to service for the 2025 season, whilst the agreement provides useful income for the 2857 Society”.

While the EMF completes the building of their new 3500 Gallon tender for 7802, it considers the loan of 2857’s tender will also allow 7802 to operate with a more authentic appearance than would be the case when paired with the 4000 Gallon Tender.

The tender is due to move to Bridgnorth in late September for recommissioning and repainting into BR lined green to match 7802.
