Hi all I’m lead to believe that GWR 28xx (3822) will be visiting the MHR over the bank holiday weekend 23rd to 25th May to cover for 850 Lord Nelson visit to Eastleigh works open day.

Seems an awfully expensive way of covering for one weekend's worth of normal service trains... ?

I love stories like this, where do they start?

I have this morning been moving 3822 around Didcot, and will confirming a small smokebox repair, I have also confirmed with the loco manager that 3822 is not leaving Didcot this year, this was also the first he had heard of it.

Hi all yesterday someone gave me the wrong loco that is coming to the MHR. At this point in time I don't know which loco is coming to the MHR. All I can say is there is another loco in the pipe line.

Whatever comes in i'd like to say thanks to the MHR for hiring it in, it would be a shame to have such an event at Eastleigh minus such an iconic Southern loco.

    Yes it is!

So lets apply a process of deduction and elimination.

First as it covering for the short period that LN is away at Eastleigh it has to be from a nearby line to minimise transportation costs.

Secondly it needs to be from a line that can spare an engine right now.

Didcot is unlikely as the extra cost of negotiating NR metals has to be taken into account. The Bluebell doent have any tank engines of the requisite size. The Spa Valley engines have both visited before both the jinty and the 57xx and this is supposeed to be a new visitor. Which leaves the Swanage Railway.

They have 6695 and two 4MT tanks. The 4MTs are both in Mr Rileys favourite livery and one could probably be spared since Swanage has two Bullieds and 6695, and 30053 to call on.

    Gentlemen I give you 80078,

    Elementary my Dear Watson!

Ok for starters, the two Bulleids and M7 will be attending Eastleigh... and seeing as 80104 isn't at the Swanage Railway at the moment and is currenly undergoing work, and once she is back she will be reassembled and painted i can't see she will be ready for that weekend... bit unlikely Swanage are going to lend out any of the two remaining main locos (80078 & 6695) when 3 are already off on their travels on a bank holiday weekend....

The MHR website also says "A Tank engine NEW to MHR is due to arrive next week". That 100% rules out 80078 as she went there in 2000. http://www.watercressline.co.uk/images/std4tank.jpg

Surely it will be a class of loco that hasn't been to the MHR before?

    What about the N7? =P~
