    Looking at this item it occurred to me to wonder if there was a technical benefit to GW copper capped chimneys or was it just for show?

    It was just for show, there is no technical reason for it at all. In fact they only did it for passenger locos, goods locos generally weren't fitted with them, although since preservation some have just for show or because they have used a chimney obtained from another loco.
