Something has just come to mind from when I was 8, in 1968, would have been about June. That year, I went on holiday to Largs, in Scotland with mum and dad, by car. On the way back, we stopped somewhere just south of Carlisle, near the West Coast main line, on the descent from Shap and I can faintly remember a train passing, heading north. I can recollect the mixed rake of maroon and blue/grey Mark1s ( I had Triang ones in these colours!) and I thought the loco was a Britannia - again, I had the Triang one

Would this have been possible at this late date, or has my mind played tricks on me? If it was a Brit it could only have been 70013, suppose it could have been a Standard 5?

I doubt it was 1968, could it possibly have been the year before?

May have been, long time ago.

PS, the same Triang Britannia and Mark 1s are still running round my loft nearly 50 years on!

Normal steam over Shap finished at the end of 1967. It's possible that some enthusiast specials ran after that, but the ones I can remember used the S&C.

4472 did a special over Shap in 1968, but that was in October. She also did at least one northbound over Shap in 1969.

The October 1968 run was The Moorlander. I was on it!

    Memories play tricks!
What if you actually stopped at say, Hest Bank?
You may then have seen 70013 working a special from Preston to Carnforth, due at Carnforth at 1150, though possibly running late.
According to Six Bells Jn it ran on Whit Sunday, 2nd June 1968, was run by BR and called 'The Last Days of Steam'.
