How HS2 could transform Manchester Piccadilly station

Manchester City Council have produced a report which looks at how HS2 could transform Piccadilly Station and create a ‘world-class intermodal transport facility’ in the city.

Working alongside Arup, HS2 and architects Bennetts Associates, the city authority looked at station projects around the world for inspiration, including the $485 million regeneration of Denver Union station and St Pancras International.

The vision describes how the station and surrounding districts should create ‘a real sense of impact’ for visitors to the city, with a ‘distinctive’ design which compliments the Victorian-era train shed.

The report explores different options for linking the new high-speed hub to Manchester’s light rail system, Metrolink.


“Using the catalyst of HS2s arrival as a ‘once- in-a-century’ opportunity to fundamentally change Manchester by creating a new gateway and extending the city centre eastwards to the inner ring road and beyond,” the document states.


“Creating a new district focussed around the Station and Boulevard with public spaces, streets and buildings that empower people, generate activity, foster belonging and promote civic pride.”
