What do you think is the maximum you should put on a 4.7Gb DVD? I've never gone much over 60 minutes.

I have put 90 minutes on one disc. Variable Bit Rate (VBR) average 6Mbps, maximum 8Mbps normally just fills a single-sided disc. Of course, quite a lot depends on your compression software, but that's a discussion for a different thread...

Is the quality on a 2hr DVD better or worse than the quality on a 2hr tape?

In my experience it depends on the application you're using and the quality you want. I can get two hours of mpeg2 quality video on a DVD using Pinnacle and my Sony DVD recorder. Any more than that reduces the quality to something like you might get on a VCR.

I'm currently producing a editing a DVD using Corel and I'll be interested to see the results after I burn it.

I find it's best to record on the camcorder using the highest quality available so I start off with the highest quality. It pays off especially in low light conditions as it was on the SVR yesterday afternoon.

Do some camcorders have different quality options? Mine is on HD and that's it.

My Canon HG10 which by default records in HD also has an option to change the quality of the recording. I don't know whether this is true of other HD camcorders by other manufacturers. The effect of the changes is to really have a better colour saturation but it also increases dramatically the amount of disc space required. It's a bit like changing the ASA rating of a conventional film emulsion.

You may like to know that there is a web-site that is dedicated to AV. You can find it here ... http://www.avforums.com/forums/

Just read the instruction book again, mine does have the option to go back to normal DV quality but I cannot really see the point. :-k

'DV quality' is usually a better quality than mpeg. The point is that you will get better colour saturation and better definition generally if you record in the higher definition, just as you would if you changed from, say, 200 ASA to 25ASA. This can be a help in low light conditions where the lens can find it difficult to cope. The downside is that a sequence recorded in DV (or any other higher quality mode) will take up more disc space on your camcorder than the default quality. This can be a hassle when a camcorder uses mini-DVD as its recording media, it's less of an issue where a camcorder uses DV tape or a hard disc.

    Regards

Colombine, one reason why with my new HD camera I've stayed with tape rather than going to mini DVD or hard drive. I believe a much more practical option and with the tapes kept as backup, a more reliable long term storage format. I have CDs that I have stored stills on and after 3/4 years I am now having problems with my PC being unable to read the complete disc.

I've just had a look at your video 'Cumbrian Fellsman 7th Feb' on YouTube. Very nice, really good. Bet you were cold though!

I've just being experimenting with a few things and just burnt a DVD with 2 hour long videos on, one with titles and the other without which lead to me burning the DVD at just 4.5Mbps.

The outcome, well it's in the bin... the quality was astonishing.

And someone asked me last weekend at the NNR if i could opt out of the HD option and i really didn't have a clue, think i may examine the user manual, although the quality the camera is currently producing is perfectly fine in my opinion…

Thanks, I was rather pleased with the result that day particularly the second clip, a remote mic is certainly wothwhile.
I've know it colder, so bad in fact that the LCD screen gave up as they do below a certain temperature.
