Huawei to power Express Rail Link communications network

Huawei has won the contract to power the communication systems on Hong Kong’s Express Rail Link – a new high-speed line connecting the territory with mainland China.

The Chinese company is already supplying a GSM-R radio system for the £5.5 billion Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong line, which is due to open in 2015.

Construction began on the flagship infrastructure project in 2010.

The line is one of five major rail projects being undertaken in Hong Kong by operator MTR.

“Huawei is very excited to expand our offerings and services for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Rail Link,” said Fang Liangzhou, vice president of Network Energy Product Line at Huawei.

“We fully understand that a highly-reliable electrical system is critical for the normal functioning of the radio communication system which is at the heart of the railway’s safe operation, hence, we will make sure the power supply solution we provide to this project meets the industry’s highest standard and helps the customer run the railway safely and efficiently.”

Huawei has said that the power supply will offer “extraordinary power density”, delivering output of 12kW from a height of just 5U.
