The year was 1970 and in May we had an excursion train trip to London for the day on one of those incredibly cheap trips for £8 from Manchester Piccadilly according to my notes. We bashed terminal stations including Paddington and Waterloo for Hydraulics before taking the local out to Willesden for Old Oak Common. Presenting at the foreman’s office with a polite request produced permission, but “no climbing on loco’s, jumping over pits, and check back when leaving”, an equally polite thank you and we were in!
