Anyone got recent news on how the restoration of this loco is doing? I just wondering as on a whim I looked at the Caledonian Railway's and the 46464's websites and last bit of news was 2010.

I have not called in at Bridge of Dun for a long time but the loco was looking pretty sad a few years back.

As far as I'm aware, the loco is no longer on the CR, but is at a site alogside. I think that means in practice that its future isn't necessarily tied to the CR once it is back in working order.

It's owned between a private individual and the Carmylie Pilot Company Ltd (may not be the exact title) as far as I understood. It's at a site at Bridge of Dun but has no physical access to the Caledonian Railway. A small workshop had been set-up in a shipping container for work on smaller parts. The boiler requires a new inner firebox which seemed to be outwith the group's financial capabilities, in my opinion.

I seem to remember that when the loco was at Aviemore, 46428 was bought from Woodhams to provide a replacement boiler but was later sold on when it was decided that 46464s own firebox was repairable. I guess that things have changed again?

I don't think 46428 was bought as a view for spares for 46464, more likely for 46512. 46512 is owned by a subsidiary of the Strathspey Railway Company while 46464 was owned by a private individual at the time.

46428 was sold one winter to help pay the bills during a poor financial situation.

Yes, 46428 came out of Barry to provide a boiler for 46464. 46464's firebox was deemed to be damaged following the lighting of a fire in it with no water in the boiler. However, it was decided that the damage was repairable and 46428 was sold on to the Bury Standard 4 Group at the ELR.
Incidently, 46428's inner firebox is not in the best of health.

Apologies for the lack of website updates in recent years, but I can assure you that restoration work is still underway and making progress. The tender work was finished a few years back with the exception of re-wheeling it. The loco has now received complete new cab sides, roof and running boards. A boiler inspection a few years back revealed that he firebox was not as badly damaged as first thought, and that two 18" square repair patches and some remedial work to some cracks that have existed since the box was built are all that is required, along with some local repairs to the front tube plate. A number of stays will require bushing and replacing, but nothing like the wholesale replacement of the firebox as originally envisaged. A replacement smoke box barrel has also been rolled and will shortly be riveted up ready to be reattached to the boiler once both are back in the frames. Visible progress on the boiler has been slow to-date as we don't want to end up with a fully repaired boiler with the inspectors clock ticking and an unfinished loco to put it in.
