A post on wnxx.com suggests 86 259 might not be available either due to not enough notice to the loco owner. Two questions as a result: If 86 259 not available what will take the train back to London and why is it not steam back to London in any case?

I can answer your second question by saying that there simply isn't enough time in the day to run a locomotive to Newcastle, turn it and service it properly for a return to KX.

    86101 / 87002 don't seem to get much work...
89001 has had 3 traction motors overhauled.. 3 more to go then preservation could have a 125mph approved machine.

Just because it is not on RTT yet, does not mean it is cancelled. One trip this Saturday was not on RTT earlier this week.

Correct but I think that is just Q path though it does occupy P1 from 0721 to gone 8 so the RTC trip is likely to be pre 0700 departure. Just as well we decided to join it at Stevenage as we can drive there in 2 hours and know we will get home

Yes. I have now phoned RTC who said "we are not aware of a problem with our train, we have not been given the times yet". While trying to be helpful and certainly polite the person on the phone seems to have never heard of RTT.

In any case I think NR are leaving it unacceptably late to release times and RTC to dispatch tickets, especially as it is a straight out and back run on one line and not a complicated trip using freight lines or changing regions.

Why can't they issue tickets at once with a provisional departure time and email the actual one once known?

What the lady is saying is almost certainly the truth. Until the times are in the system, RTT can't show them and RTC won't know them either. Nothing either can do about it until NR release the times.

    Hmmm...

I was thinking about joining big brother Don on this one. I'd like to get an A4 out of The Cross. But an early departure makes that a problem, (I should have thought about that re the distance it has to cover), and the outline timings look rather slow. Nearly 7 hours to Newcastle.

I'll wait for the RTT times before making a final decision, but it is looking unlikely now.

This isn't late compared to some trips. Calm down all will be revealed in due course.

Indeed. It's Friday at 21:50 now, and RTT hasn't got tomorrow morning's Poole-Bristol-Kingswear times up yet. They'll appear in due course, though. I think that's what's meant by a "very late notice special train path"! ;-)

For me this tour is a must as I have never had steam north from York though I have had an A4 out of KX. Big Al is going so if you book we could make up a Southern table and make derogatory comments about Gresley pacifics all day. Pity no Deltic on the return. Very fine engines

Excuse me. When you're on the ECML behind a Gresley Pacific, i.e. in the presence of greatness, you bow your head with due deference. :)

But who was it who did a lot of Gresley's design work? Actually I have a very high regard for the A4s and had many good runs with them in Scotland on the 3 hour trains. I just thought we could reconstruct what we did all the time back in the 1960s on the Bournemouth line. Just off to get some new track with steam now

And it's a leisurely seven hours to Newcastle.
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U55406/2014/10/25/advanced

Judging by the loco movements at Newcastle, we will be coming back soon after 4 pm so my guess is that this should convert into something around 10 pm in London.

You do wonder who Network Rail thinks will be able to get to KX by 7 am unless they already live in London. For the life of me I don't see why they can't use the path at around 0820. The RTC tries to do the right thing by having just one pick up at Stevenage and then a Potters Bar stop is inserted.

It looks to me as though NR has simply used the same timings as for the Cath Ex trip to York on March 29th this year when a Potters Bar pick up was included. For example what happened to the 0738 path used by No 9 in October 2013 that got the train to York at the same time. Hopefully WC will ask them to think again.

North of Northallerton should be good - only about 1/3 longer than the normal schedule, and, on mainly double track with no indications of being looped, should provide a need to "keep pressing on"!

Totally agree Al. That start from The Cross knocks it on the head for me. Even if the 7 hours to Newcastle hadn't already done that.
