There are good locations at all stations and there are a number of footpaths that cross the line. Two of the most popular locations are the Cranbrook Road level crossing where you can get good shots of trains coming up the bank towards Tenterden, and Orpins Crossing just on the Tenterden side of Rolvenden Station. If you are there on Saturday, you may see me as you pass through Wittersham.

Your question has convinced me to get on with something I planned to a while ago. Photos taken in Tenterden area at http://phil-edwards.photobook.org.uk/c1864725.html

My favorite is a foot crossing near the top of Tenterden Bank. If you go to the bottom left (as you look from the railway) of the Tenterden station car park there is a foot path that leads off in a straight line, after a while it turns left, you then turn left again, over a stile. This brings you round in a circle and facing the line again. You have to go over another stile into another field then you can see the line. If you walk down a short way you can get this shot...

You can also see that location from 0:55 in my video...

If you look on an OS map the footpath is marked. Another nice spot is around Bodiam castle and the footpaths there. All my K&ESR photos on my flickr are marked on a map on flickr so if you like any of them you should be able to find the location taken! All are public access and at most very short walks from stations.
