    Hello,
I would like to find out the build and scrap dates for Kitson 5371 which was numbered No. 74 in MSC allocation. Also any other info on its operational history.
I have a photograph of the engine at work on the MSC system in 1960 and I would like to find out more about it.
Somewhere on this site a very helpful chap posted all the numbers of the MSC engines and it was from his list I found the Kitson number. Unfortunately I cannot now find the thread so I'm posting here.
I'm aware that there is a very comprehensive tome on the subject but I hesitate to acquire this merely to find out info on one solitary engine! Call me cheapskate - but there you are!
    Many thanks,
    Nick.

    Hi Nick,
MSC 74 (unnamed) was, as you say, Kitson 5371 built in 1923. It was delivered on 18th Sept and was sent to Partington coaling basin on the 22nd. It was scrapped in June 1963. I don't know how long it stayed at Partington but No 72 (another Kitson) which went to Partington new in 1921 was at Ellesmere Port in June 1962. Sorry I can't be more specific but I do have some of the late Jim Peden's MSC photos (including a Kitson) which can be obtained from the Industrial Railway Soc'y. The "Railways of the Manchester Ship Canal" is well worth buying - I've had my copy since 1984.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

    Hello Ray,
Many, many thanks for the information. Much appreciated.
If you get the Bylines magazine the photo of No. 74 will appear with a caption or two in due course.
If you don't mind I'll credit you as one of the sources of information.
Thanks very much for the recommendation on the book. I'll look it out and probably invest in it.
    Cheers,
    Nick.

Hi Nick, Glad to help. I am a regular Bylines reader and actually have a couple of draft articles I've been meaning to finish and submit but haven't got round to it yet! I've always had an interest in the MSC system as it was fairly local to where I grew up. If you need any further info/photos let me know.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

    Hi Ray,
Thanks for that. If you are interested I can let you have a scan of the picture if you can give me your Email address.
    Cheers,
    Nick.
