The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has recommended a Skanska, Traylor Bros and J.F. Shea (STS) joint venture for a $1.6 billion design and build contract to extend the city’s Purple Line.

The 6.3-kilometre line will see the existing underground route extended from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cinega.

Three new stations will be built as part of the project, which also includes the installation of signalling and telecommunication systems, traction power supply and distribution, and fare collection systems.

Although the STS bid was the highest of the three submitted proposals, it also scored higher in technical aspects of the project’s delivery.

Work could start on site later this year if the recommendation is backed by the metro authority’s board later this month.

The extension should be completed by October 2024.

Skanska is building the extension of the Expo light rail project from Culver City to Santa Monica, scheduled to open in early 2016. The company also worked on the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension from Pasadena to Azusa, also scheduled to open in 2016.

Skanska and Traylor Bros are also working together to deliver the Regional Connector – a 3-kilometre underground light rail project in downtown Los Angeles that will connect the Metro Blue, Gold and Expo lines.
