So I was looking online at preserved Southern EMUs when I came across the class 432 and how there was a single 4-Rep motor coach left converted to departmental service. 2482 or 99605 in network rail service.
The most recent information I could find is this image below.

It has been placed in storage in Derby after being replaced. This was over a year ago.
Does anyone have information about its where about's and if it still survives.

999605 still part of the ultrasonic test fleet apparently - I understand it's currently stored serviceable as spare vehicle.

Mere details! Mind you the arcs they used to strike going through Byfleet in the rain were spectacular.

Not half as exciting as watching a 74 flashhover, approaching woking yard, on the up slow one day, massive blue flash, clouds of smoke
i am surprised that any vehicles from the REP units survived as they were by the time they were withdrawn getting on a bit, most having been built in 1966-67 and of course they were stripped of their electrical gear for the new 442's , were the later units, converted loco stock, or new build, because the last 3 units came in later and by then, BR was building Mk 2's or may have even started on the MK3.

Possibly only out-paced by the long distance empty stock movement of an 8-REP late one night that I was privileged to have a ride on at one point during the confused period as the 'Wessex electrics' started to appear.....

Robin, i thought that REP units were not allowed to operate in multiple because the current drawn would blow the line breakers or are you on about the short lived formations of a single Rep power car , 6 trailor vehicles and a Tc driving trailor? i can remember the 8 car TC sets, with a couple of 73's on the back when the reps were withdrawn to provide the traction packages fror the new units .

That is why it was in the middle of the night with nothing else about to draw current....

oh i see :) yes that would have been " interesting" an 8 Rep would have been flipping fast out of the blocks i have also seen some very interesting things on my former home turf after dark, at Hook, the first "official" steam on 3rd rail , with Taw Valley, coming through on the fast, at line speed, and at Weybridge, one evening, the ghost train, in the form of an M7 with 3 or 4 on, on the slow, ,un announced, followed by less than 5 minutes later by Clan line, on the rest of the stock, The faces of those on the platform was great ,as out of the gloom, first came this elderly tank engine, whistle blasting, through the station, into the night, then suddenly, on the fast hammering though at speed, came, this ghost of the past expresses, then again it was dark, just the smell of coal, hot oil and steam, several people looked shocked, thinking did we just imagine that :)

Going back to the Ultrasonic fleet, my mate who knows about these things says that there are five ex-EMU vehicles in the fleet (62384, 62287, 62482, 62483 & 62356) and he reckons that 2 of these are ex-4REP vehicles. I don't know enough about SR EMUs to tell you which two though (and I can't be bothered to look this up!)

Apparently they're all ex-motor coaches and the traction motors are replaced with the heavy ultrasonic test equipment.

I was fascinated by the REP/TC system when I first encountered it. I especially liked the forethought in providing a few 3TC to allow a 11TC plus class 73 formation to fit in platforms.I asked a driver how fast the REPs would go and he told me One Hundred and Screw...(there was a stop on the speedo at 100mph...)

    Yep, quite right about speed.

I was reminded of the REP's when I watched a TV programme detailing the Chernobyl disaster when the staff reported what the radiation levels were as the maximum on their Geiger counters. The problem was that the needle was hard up against the stop......

when you think, they were designed to be able to propel a 12 car 4TC 4TC + REP, to Bournemouth, and haul them in the London bound direction, at 90 mph, if you got a REP on its own, as i did one day, from Waterloo to Woking, then acceleration was blistering fast, and even when pushing a single 4 TC, not much could beat one, and speeds into three figures was nothing new;) i have heard the 100 and screw remark also, they seemed to ride very lively also, i can remember watching the non stoppers flying through Woking the leading cabs seemed to bounce around a lot and yes i have been on the weymouth portion when the donkey has died ,and had to be rescued by another 33

One of lifes more interesting experiences.........................

I remember Bradley Manor hammering up to Whiteball from Exteter in 'pre OTMR etc' days leaving the BMW Drivers standing and a Mike Notley report of a run over Shap that began with 'It was Driver Buggins (or whatever his name was) last day before retirement that suggested a speed of 110mph downhill. Which suggests that there were some very quick post preservation runs

    Admissions anyone??
