Yesterday afternoon I took a quick visit out to the Piemonte Railway Musuem in Savigliano and found a Class 981 rack tank loco recently arrived. These machines have 4 cylinders with two for normal traction and two for the rack. It's in a sorry state but restoration has started. Seen here in happier times on it's home line.

The noise these make as they climb the rack is almost as good as a Duchess pulling up the Lune gorge. When I can upload my pictures I will link from here as well to show it's current condition.
Whilst going over it I worked out that to get within 13'1" the only difficult part would be to lower the dome and regulator by 4". Now that would be a sight pulling up Foxfield bank....

I was with one of her regular fireman down in Naples yesterday and he was saddened to see what had become of his engine. We did take time out to light up his 7 1/4" Mallet and have an afternoon of sheer fun. I eventually got the hang of using two separate regulators but not before making a few errors.
