Litter bins back on Underground

Rubbish bins have been put back on the London Underground (LU) for the first time since the 7 July bomb attacks.

The bins have clear plastic bags hanging from a metal frame designed to make it easier to spot suspicious packages which may be placed inside. An LU spokesman said after a security review the bins were returned to most Tube stations at the end of March.

A total of 52 people died when four suicide bombers targeted three Tubes and a bus.

LU said: "The safety and security of all Tube passengers and staff is our top priority. Checks of the litter receptacles are carried out by station staff as part of our regular station security checks."

He also said that there had been a 50% increase in the number of British Transport Police officers patrolling the Tube in the past two years.
