Work has this week begun on a £2.4m revamp of St Austell railway station in Cornwall.

The scheme links in with other regeneration activities in St Austell, including the town centre redevelopment and the Civic Pride Initiative, designed to enhance 'gateways' into the town such as Trevarthian Road, which runs along the westernmost station boundary.

Station improvements will include a new footbridge to be erected over the railway and installation of lifts. A new canopy, refurbished waiting room and toilets will be provided on the northern platform. New signage, seating and CCTV are also included. The existing bus station will be demolished, restoring views over the town, and new bus and taxi interchange facilities constructed to the south side of the railway station.
