Madrid Metro to reopen line after three-month closure

    Engineers in Madrid have almost finished a 1.1 million euro project to renew a section of the city’s oldest metro line.

    Madrid Metro is hoping to restore services to the line by mid-September, having closed it to trains on June 29.

    Between Bilbao and Vodafone Sol Stations, workers exposed the tunnel’s steel framework before shotcreting and injecting fresh grout into the ground to reduce settlement.

    The Regional Secretary of Transport, Infrastructure and Housing, Pablo Cavero, visited today a section of the tunnel under repair.

    The 23km Line 1 was officially opened by King Alfonso XIII on October 17, 1919, making it the oldest line on the network.
