Mediterranean Corridor funding approved

Almost €200 million worth of rail improvements have been approved by the Spanish government for the realisation of the Mediterranean Corridor.

Funding for a series of contracts totalling more than €198 million has bee confirmed that will help develop the TEN-T priority rail route between Almeria-Valencia-Barcelona and the French border.

The work will centre around the Valencia-Barcelona section and includes contracts for the communications systems between Almussafes-Valencia-Castellón de la Plana, the installation of standard gauge track and electrification between Castelló and Vinerós, and trackwork and electrification between Vandellós and Vinerós.

The introduction of a standard gauge railway along Spain’s east coast has been identified as being key to establishing an efficient passenger and freight link between Spain and the rest of Europe.

A joint venture between Tecsa, Dragados and Spanish Society of Industrial Assemblies has already been awarded a €60 million contract to build a new standard gauge line between Valencia and Sagunto, as well as upgrading the existing infrastructure to the European standard.
