    Police with dogs and metal detectors greeted rail passengers at Carlisle in an operation to deter knife and drug crime on trains.

    Operation Shield involved the use of detectors similar to those at airports for several hours on Friday night. Passengers were asked to pass through the detectors in the operation by British Transport Police (BTP).
