That brought back some good memories! I was the fireman on board 31874 when it became the first loco to pass under Bighton Road bridge as we inched the first track-panel train up towards the recently relaid track railhead and the track machines. Driver Pete Court propelled the loco at an unbelievably slow crawl as the track we ran on was still unballasted and temporary. Great skill from Pete and also a tribute the 2 cylinder N class, which was faultless. (We must restore that engine!! Don't let it leave the line)
Note sure where Pete would be today - I know he was an Eastleigh driver on the big railway who spent his days on Class 33s engineers trains and his weekends on Maunsell Moguls.
