Looking at next years special events on the MHR. The Spring gala will see City of Truro 3440 and Earl of Berkeley 9017 making a visit.

I hope that pairing can still draw the crowds... Not exactly the first time is it? Not wanting to sound pessimistic - they ARE both nice locos, but whether their pairing can still draw crowds, time will tell...

They haven't met yet in their repainted guises but as you say that double-frame double-header has been done at least twice in the last 7 years.

Still, it'll be good if they pair 9017 with the excellent set of BR wagons

It will be good to see both of them again. Never seen them together though. Yet to see 9017 in her BR livery. They should draw the crowds in. Never know there might be another visitor. Also noticed they have announced Tornado's return in October. I guess this will be for Wizard week. Will there be another repaint in order to maroon?

Having both of these locos paired together twice in seven years is hardly a common sight and shouldn’t be seen as a non event? Don’t forget the MHR doesn’t have a flat railway policy.

Llangollen, SVR and Bluebell come to mind straight away, that's 3... Hopefully passenger numbers will prove me wrong though.

You can't please everyone with the choice of visiting locos. Next will have the photographers complaining about the colour of the coaching stock and asking for a rake of chocolate & cream to accompany both visiting locos.

Not saying they're not good locos, far from it! I merely question how long their pairing can continue to be seen as a draw...

Maybe a point of interest to some people. Last years event took place in early March but next years gala take place at the end of March.

My thoughts exactly but maroon would be better!

The photographers may and probably have seen these 2 GWR 4-4-0s paired before, but they are only a small proportion of all the visitors to a gala. Few members of the public visiting the MHR event will be the same people who saw the pairing on other railways.

The MHR's chocolate & cream coaches were repainted many moons ago, probably before the majority of forum members were around to see them. There was once even at least one vehicle in 'plum & spilt milk', a BR livery from 1948.

We can accommodate you with one maroon real ale coach and serving a great selection of traditional beers.

    cheers

Sounds the best bet to drown my sorrows as the Mid Hants is invaded by the G(yawn)W. At least I suppose these two don't look the same as the rest...

Can I add my two pennys worth . As the Mid Hants trains in its BR days used to cross the DNS at Winchester Jct and latterly join it at Shawford Jct both 3440 and Dukedogs used to work this line so both are very local engine classes and it will be nice to see them working over the Alps . As for pairing them up well maybe on one working they are both capable of working over the line alone .
So I cant see the point of being negative about this event already it will be nice to see them here and well done for getting both of them.
As for a freight working well we shall have to see . Lets hope its not a case of off the low loader Thursday and back on it again Monday It will be nice to have 9017 around for a few more days..

Once again, I wish to clarify, I'm not being negative per se - they ARE both nice locos, and I might well go to the gala - I'm simply questioning whether these 2, which have been to a fair few galas together already, will continue to be a draw.

This will be the first time that they have been paired together as GWR 3717 and BR Black 9017, so it will be something a little different.

Can see where you're coming from, but I don't think their popularity has waned just yet.
