to mark the 200th anniversary of the passing of the act that enabled the Cromford and High Peak to be built , the Butterley Ironworks beam engine at the Middleton Top engine house was operated on steam for the first time since 1967 (when the C&HP was closed)

With its boilers out of use since the 1950's steam was provided by two Fowler traction engines

No I do not currently volunteer
I also bore witness to this once in a lifetime magnificence of industrial motion. They had a rather dramatic steam leak when I was there which filled the building up! Saunas are apparently good for the pores. The steeple grange railway was on fine form too, as was my post walk pub after all the excitement, Murphys on tap (Guinness is overrated in comparison), the pooch wasn’t fazed by big noisy whirly things either. Excellent day.
