Just thought I would share a few pictures taken this weekend in Milan of their historic trams.

Several routes exist running to / from the city center (Duomo) to the central Station. (1 & 2)
Also there are some circular city routes, connecting central station with the Navigli district.

The trams were run down in the 1980s when more modern trams were added, and a number of lines reduced, however there are many still inservice and considered a trade mark of the city.

Milan offers a weekend tourist ticket at 5.60 Euro, or 3.00 Euro for one day unlimited rides on the trams (as well as other public transport).

A dozen trams were sold to San Francisco in the 1980's and run on the F Line today, in much the same unaltered condition as the trams in Milan today.

Central Station itself is worth a visit, it's the first station I recall with Marble Fronted, with Flying horses on the roof and waterfalls built into the walls flowing to the street.
Even the platforms have widescreen TV advertising at the entrances to the platforms.
Notice the murals on the walls inside and carvings of the antique motor car, steam train and steam ships on the walls !

I was there at the weekend too.. Nice to see the pictures. Our flat in Milan is on the number 30 route which still has these running. The service starts at 05:00 but as we are on the way to the depot we get an endless stream from 04:30.

On the next circle out there are still trolleybuses running so anyone who wants to see vintage transport should consider a visit to Milan. The Ferrovia Nord still has stock dating from the 1920's in service on some trains. Then compare that with the latest Freccia Rossa at Centrale for Rome.

Turin has replcaed it's old trams with a modern fleet but there are still some tourist trams round the centre on certain days.
