Light rail has been confirmed as the preferred option for Minneapolis’ Bottineau Transitway.

Estimated at $1 billion, the 13-mile line will provide an important link between Minneapolis and the city of Brooklyn Park.

The new corridor, which is designed to reduce congestion in the busy northwest area of the Twin Cities, will connect with the existing Hiawatha Line, the Central Corridor and Northstar Commuter Rail services at the Interchange.

In a statement on the Metropolitan Council website, chairman Susan Haigh said: “Bottineau is key to the region’s future development and continued economic success.

“As the Metropolitan Council works to build a 21st century transit system, Bottineau LRT will provide residents and employees of the corridor greater access to major destinations in the metro area through links to other major transit corridors.”
