Looking threw model railway magazine over the past few years now. I was wandering if anyone has or is thinking about insuring their model railway? I know that you can’t put a price on the layout but you can put a price on the locos and rolling stock that you have purchased over a period of time. The average loco now costs about £80.00 and coaches and wagons start around £10.00 and upwards. Even a small layout could easily have over £500.00 worth of rolling stock.

Ive added ours to the house contents cover, listed as a line item with a specific value.

The premium does go up, but it's worth the peace of mind if youve got a good collection.
Touchwood Ive never needed to make a claim, you can also include it "away from home" if your taking something on tour.

At the risk of having a burglary, I've got a fairly hefty amount of dosh tied up in my collection. Put it this way, I'd probably cry if something ever happened to them!

It's subjective to the burglar !, I know one individual who was burgled many years ago.. they took his cash off the table, stero, tv, dvd, jewelry and left the collection of builders plates and a model raiways behind.

Hi. Could you give me a rough idea of how much it does go up? I can't decide whether to declare my collection to my contents people, or insure it separately....

It's about £50 a year, for a high cover value, (I mean exhibition quantities of x00's locos / stock), they did ask for an itemisation one year, this is with Zurich, it also included contents damaged or stolen whilst in transport or display away from the property (ie. exhibitions).

Someone else I knew has insurance on their contents cover as a line item with Norwich Union for less cover, less cost but a greater excess, they reccomended to take Photographs (but not actually for the copies.. just to have photo's available to prove they were owned just incase of a total loss claim).

Incidentally I marked by high value items with an invisible marker pen inside the body shells using a package provided by the insurance company, which reduced by premium as well.
