New York transport authority MTA is to press ahead with plans to install video cameras on its trains following the fatal December 1 Metro-North derailment.

Following a recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board, MTA is looking to procure interior and exterior cameras in the hope that it will deter bad practice and aid any future accident investigations.

MTA said it will now approach companies to design, manufacture and deliver on-board video recording system.

Thomas Prendergast, MTA chairman and chief executive, said: “The MTA is committed to safe operations at all its agencies.

“We will be systematically implementing recommendations put forward by the NTSB and other regulators to ensure the best practices are adhered to throughout the MTA family.”

The initial order will focus on Metro-North’s M-8 and both Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) M-7 series trains.
