The operator of Stockholm’s metro system, MTR, has announced plans to run an open access service between the capital and Gothenburg.

MTR has ordered six new FLIRT trainsets from Stadler, which will operate 110 weekly services along the 455 kilometre route, in an order worth £66 million.

[IMG]Delivery of the MTR Express trains is expected to take place in autumn 2014, with services then operating following a testing and commissioning process.

Jay Walder, chief executive of MTR Corporation, said: “We believe this will not only be attractive to existing rail passengers, but will also draw other business and leisure travellers to choose rail over other modes of transport to commute between Sweden’s East and West coasts.”

The new trains, which will be built in Switzerland, will be designed to provide ‘reliable services in Nordic weather conditions’ with features such as underfloor heating, snowplows on the bogies and heat recovery systems.

As well as manufacturing the new trains, Stadler Rail will also maintain the fleet.
