THE privately-run West Somerset Railway and Network Rail are combining to help each other on massive projects.

Network Rail is offloading to the WSR more than 100,000 tonnes of free used ballast from its huge South-West track relaying and maintenance scheme.

The ballast is for a locomotive and turning triangle the WSR is building at Norton Fitzwarren, close to Network Rail's Fairwater Yard base.

Following deliveries of 1,000 tonnes of stone, WSR's contractors sort, clean and grade the ballast for new tracks formations and embankments at its 33-acre site.

The private railway is building three miles of track to allow trains to be turned in three movements, permitting the WSR to accept visiting steam trains.

For more on this story - and to find how the WSR is turning more stone deliveries into money, see Thursday's Somerset County Gazette.
