Holland’s electrified rail network will be completely powered by wind energy from 2018, the Dutch government has announced.

Traction power will be fully provided by the green energy source under a new agreement signed between electricity providers Eneco and Vivens, and a collection of Dutch rail operators.

Half of the 1.4 TWh of electricity required annually will be generated by wind farms in the Netherlands, with the remaining energy coming from Norway, Sweden and Belgium.

Eneco and Vivens will power Holland’s electrified network between 2015 and 2025 under the agreement.
