NETWORK Rail and two major suppliers have finalised contracts for the delivery of 100,000 tonnes of rails a year.

Corus has signed a seven-year, multi-million pound contract valued at between £40 million and £50 million in the first year.

The company is currently working to complete a new £130 million investment programme at its Scunthorpe steelworks in the second half of 2006.

This will enable the company to produce rail of up to 120 metres long in the UK.

Until then Network Rail will be supplied with rail from its existing Corus plant at Workington.

Another contract has been signed with VOESTALPINE which is worth around £12 to £16 million in the first year of the five year contract.

A third supplier is still in negotiations with Network Rail, which is carrying out a big renewals programme.
