Network Rail, which runs Britain's railway tracks and signals, is set to ask the government for an extra £7bn.

The firm wants the money to invest in infrastructure on busy commuter routes to cope with rising passenger numbers.

Rail network plans ‘on the wrong track’

East Anglia's rail travellers were left out in the cold last night after the region failed to feature in a multi-billion-pound shopping list designed to improve the network nationwide.

The rail infrastructure company Network Rail yesterday launched a bid for an extra £7.9bn to meet a predicted 30pc increase in the number of miles passengers will travel over the next 10 years.

Network Rail seeks £8bn for infrastructure

Network Rail asked the government today for an extra £8bn to modernise Britain's creaking rail infrastructure.

The not-for-profit company, which owns Britain's railway tracks, stations and signals, said it would be able to cut costs by nearly £1bn a year but still needed the extra funding to make essential improvements, particularly to overcrowded commuter routes in the south-east of England.
