South West Trains has launched its first 10-car service between Waterloo and Windsor in a bid to increase capacity on its suburban network.

The train will operate 14 services between Waterloo International and Windsor every weekday.

Over the course of the year, a further 98 cars will be added to boost capacity on the operator’s mainline and suburban rail services.

Tim Shoveller, managing director for the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance, said: “As we squeeze more seats and space onto what is already the country’s busiest railway, it is inevitable that the projects become more technically complex.

“This project alone has seen the rebuild of modern trains, extension of over 60 platforms, moving signals and upgrading power suppliers – all whilst running an incredibly busy railway.

“This is a great step forward, but we are determined to do more as demand for services continues to grow. Great progress is now being made with the Department for Transport to redesign Waterloo and the surrounding area which could enable us to introduce more additional trains and provide some of the biggest improvements at Waterloo since the 1930s.”
