RAIL freight operator EWS and automotive logistics company STVA have introduced a new train service from Ford's facility at Dagenham Docks on the Thames Estuary to Garston in Liverpool.

The new rail freight service is planned to operate five days a week. However, due to high levels of demand for finished cars, the service is initially operating six days a week.

Commenting on the new contract, Gareth Roberts, EWS automotive account manager, said: “This is a significant rail freight operation, closely integrated into Ford's overall supply chain, with services required to arrive on time.”

EWS and STVA operate daily automotive services by rail across Britain, to and from continental Europe via the Channel Tunnel and internationally through ports.

Trains can haul up to 250 cars in one movement and operate at 75mph, far faster and with greater volumes than road transport can provide.

EWS says that, considering increasing road congestion and costs, rail provides an economic, punctual and reliable alternative for the automotive manufacturing industry.
