New look for Glasgow subway station

Graham Construction is to deliver a £5.3 million redevelopment of Glasgow Subway’s St Enoch station.

The renewed city centre station, which will feature new street level glass canopies, will become the fifth station, after Hillhead, Partick, Ibrox and Kelvinhall, to be upgraded as part of a £288 million subway modernisation programme.

Work will begin next month and SPT has said it “will endeavour” to keep the station open throughout the project.

The authority is aiming to complete all concourse and platform works before the Commonwealth Games. However, the installation of the canopies and a new lift will be carried out after the event.

All work at the station is due to be complete in 2015.

Jim Coleman, SPT chairman, said: “The modernised St Enoch station will make it a fantastic asset for SPT and we believe it will prove to be a new landmark for Glasgow.”

As well as upgrades to stations, new trains, new signalling and a new smart ticketing system are all being delivered as part of the improvement programme.
