New Moscow tram fleet to enter service in July

A new fleet of modern trams will arrive on the streets of Moscow in July, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said.

More than half of 120 trams ordered by the city will enter service in the summer, with the remaining 50 set to go into operation in 2015.

Uraltransmash, a subsidiary of the Uralvagonzavod R&D Corporation, is partnering with Polish manufacturer PESA to build the new low-floor vehicles.

“In December, we entered into a supply contract for 120 new trams. Of this total, 70 trams are expected to enter into operation this year, and another 50 next year,” the Moscow Mayor said during a visit to the Krasnaya Presnya tram depot.

Sobyanin added: “These trams are currently being tested. They offer twice as much space and seating capacity as compared to older models.”

The first vehicles will operate from Mosgortrans’ Krasnaya Presnya tram depot on route 6 from the Sokol metro station to Bratsevo.
