The first of a new fleet of trams is to be unveiled this week in Nottingham’s Wilkinson Street Depot.

Twenty-two new trams will eventually be delivered to the city by manufacturer Alstom as part of the NET Phase Two project which is extending the city’s light rail network to the south and south west, connecting Clifton and Beeston to the existing network.

Nottingham’s new trams will become the first Citadis model vehicles in the UK and more than double the current fleet of 15 trams.

Ahead of the launch event, Phil Hewitt, chief Executive of NET concessionaire, Tramlink Nottingham, said: “It is a major milestone in the ongoing network expansion project.

“When the new trams start to appear on Line One next year it will provide our existing customers with a real taste of what’s to come as we move towards an even brighter future for the network.”

The new trams are being shipped over to the East Midlands from Alstom’s factory in Barcelona.

As well as building the new light rail vehicles, Alstom has worked alongside Taylor Woodrow to deliver the 17.5 km extension, which includes a new tram bridge over the top of Nottingham station.

Global Rail News will be in Nottingham this Friday to provide live coverage of the unveiling.
