A NEW rail terminal, capable of removing up to 500,000 lorries from the roads each year, is included in plans just approved by the government for a new container terminal at Felixstowe South.

The Port of Felixstowe is already the largest container port in the UK, and one of the largest in Europe, and the new development will see the conversion of the Port's original Dock Basin into a new deep-sea container terminal.

The expansion plan has been finally approved by Transport Minister Derek Twigg.

Features of the development will include 1,350 metres of quay dredged to 16m alongside, and an additional 13 ship-to-shore gantry cranes will bring the total number in operation at the Port to 38.

An all-new North Rail Terminal, capable of removing up to 500,000 lorries from the roads each year, is included in the plans.

The first phase of the new terminal is expected to commence operation in 2008.

As part of the development, port owners Hutchinson Ports UK will upgrade both road and rail connections to the Port.

Application has already been made under the Transport and Works Act for permission to carry out a £40 million doubling of a section of the Felixstowe-Ipswich rail line.

The scheme would authorise the dualling of a four-and-a-quarter mile section of the route between Trimley St Mary and Levington, and the construction of three additional 24-wagon sidings within the existing Ipswich marshalling yard.

Subject to the necessary approvals, it is expected that the improved Felixstowe rail branch line would be fully operational by the end of 2009.

Footpath issue could sway rail objector

ONE of the main objectors to the £46.6 million project to dual part of the Felixstowe-Ipswich rail line is today set to drop its opposition - if public footpaths can be saved.
