£155m PLANS TO IMPROVE SOUTH WALES TRAIN SERVICES
A 10-YEAR plan to invest over £150 million to improve train services in South Wales and the Valleys has been announced.

The shopping list of proposals by 10 local authorities proposes new stations, increased service frequency and more capacity on trains over the period 2009-2018.

Details of the proposals will now be sent to the Welsh Assembly government and the Assembly's new railway committee by Sewta (the South East Wales Transport Alliance).

In its final report, Jacobs Consultancy, which was appointed last summer, said: 'The strategy has a capital cost of around £155m over the period. The availability of further EU Objective One funding could reduce the overall requirement, advance the programme in the target areas and inflate the programme by enabling a further network extension project. The recommended strategy requires an increasing rail subsidy of £2m to £7m a year.

“The strategy improves the environment and contributes to road safety and the reduction of accidents and provides significant economic benefits.”

    Proposals include:
    - More frequent services for the Rhymney Valley, Taff Vale, new Ebbw Vale to Newport, Abergavenny and Chepstow, and the Vale of Glamorgan

    - More frequent and longer trains for peak times

    - Five new stations at Caerleon, Magor, Llanwern, Coedkernew and St Mellons

    - Possible line extensions to Ebbw Vale Town and from Pontyclun to Beddau with new stations including Talbot Green and Llantrisant.
