Is this the old connecting tunnel to the Padarn Railway?

Huge cannabis factory found inside Bangor, North Wales railway tunnels containing cannabis worth £225,000 | Mail Online

The tunnels still look to be in very good condition and now that all of the work has been done should last another few years.

So they are. Many thanks for the correction. The different size bores lead me to think of elsewhere. This would be on the imaginary Northern extension of the WHR, as suggested on the 1st April a few years ago.

Looks similar to Grosmont on the NYMR, where the original horse-drawn bore sits next to the newer loco hauled one.

Don't like the way they use the word 'factory' poor factories surely it should be a cannabis herboreum or a cannnabis tax avoiding multinational?

They look a bit like the two tunnels leading out of Port Penrhyn. Standard gauge on the left and narrow gauge on the right. Looking at my 1961 picture there are similarities, but there are also differences. But it is 51 years since I was there! What do others think :

I don't think it is the same - there are no tunnels at Port Penrhyn - just a fairly lengthy bridge, and these days a cycle/footpath uses the trackbed. I think I might have noticed a cannabis factory when I cycled through there in September!

The reference to the Menai Business Park in the original report linked above points to the tunnels on the Bangor-Caernarfon line.

I agree. I found another picture in a book on the Penrhyn Railway which shows that the standard gauge is at a higher level than the narrow gauge. It also says that it is a bridge under the turnpike road so only a short tunnel / lengthy bridge, nothing like long enough to be the one in the BBC report. Sorry if that was a red herring.

However, it is still curious that there are two tunnels, one much smaller than the other. Not narrow gauge, either!

The OS map shows the business park and tunnels to be on the old Caernarfon branch about a quarter of a mile from the junction with the main line to Holyhead.

Growing cannabis seems to be a popular pastime in North Wales - must look up 'spliff' in my Welsh dictionary.I suppose smoking it makes up for the grim weather there in winter. :smokin:

'Yr ysbliff' would be my guess at a new formation to translate this! (As a Welsh-speaker, but I don't frequent the circles that would actually have one of these to talk about :) )
