New York subway extension project recognised

MTA’s $2.1 billion 7 Line Extension Project has been named as the 2013 winner of the prestigious Construction Project of the Year award.

The New York State Society of Professional Engineers has chosen to honour the “Running Tunnels and Underground Structures” contract – the first phase of the subway extension scheme – which is due to open in 2014.

MTA, the authority leading the extension of the 7 Line to the West Side of Manhattan from its current terminus at Times Square, has said that the project was chosen because it displayed “outstanding professional engineering efforts in developing creative solutions and innovative technologies in construction of an infrastructure project”.

The 7 Line extension has featured a number of first for construction projects in New York. It is the first to have used double-shielded tunnel boring machines (TBMs) underneath the city and the first to utilise a ground freezing method to ensure the TBMs stayed on course throughout drilling works.
