Sadly, two schemes that we had been counting on to help secure the future development of the Wealden Line have come to nothing.
In Uckfield all attempts to reopen the former station site as a car park for rail travellers have failed - largely, it seems, thanks to East Sussex County Council's (ESCC) opposition to the scheme. While council planners were quite happy to see the site used for a new gyratory road and or property speculation, a rail-based future for the site did not fit in with their plans.
This means that rail users will have to put up with the current totally inadequate parking facilities for the forseeable future - facilities which ESCC insists are prefectly adequate.
Meanwhile, in Tunbridge Wells, plans for a new turnback siding for Southeastern Trains that would have restored track to part of the former Grove Junction - Eridge route have now been scrapped.
Network Rail has now announced that contrary to previous plans, the siding will now be built alongside the existing Hastings route, just south of Grove junction.
We understand that one of the reasons for this decision was the 1 in 80 gradient on the former Tunbridge Wells West route, which would have made it difficult to comply with current construction requirements for sidings.
