Over £200,000 has been pledged to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s £2.5million ‘Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey’ campaign since it was launched last October.

The NYMR secured a ‘first round pass’ for up to £4.6million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in August 2017 for its estimated £9.2million project, which will fund a number of schemes that will help ensure the railway can continue to operate successfully for the next fifty years.

These schemes include the construction of a carriage shed capable of storing up to 40 vehicles (£4.16million), essential repairs and renewal of iron bridges around Goathland (£2.67million) and improved disabled access to the NYMR’s coaching stock (£770k).

In addition, the ‘Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey’ campaign will fund a new volunteer hostel at Grosmont, apprenticeship schemes, volunteer training and education programmes.

The railway has 24 months to raise its own match funding to the tune of £2,500,000 in order to secure the HLF grant.

North Yorkshire Moors Historical Railway Trust Chairman, John Bailey, said: “We’re extremely proud of how much money has already been raised and we would like to say huge thank you to everyone who has donated, no matter how big or small.

“The railway has been one of Yorkshire’s much-loved attractions for the last five decades, with a history of creating long lasting family memories. Now, as we look to secure our future, these funds will be invaluable.”
