I've started a new thread on the event so I can leave the Wansford MPD news for loco updates on the steam fleet.

The NVR is to hold an S&D Pines Express day on the 25th April.

Loco's in action will be LMS 4F 44422 and BR Standard 5 73050

Our BR MK1 set and freight set will be use throughout the day and it is planned to recreate a past photo which has been found of the two loco's. The photo was taken North of Shepton Mallet on the Somerset and Dorset Railway. It was July 9th, 1960 when 44422 was piloting 73050 on a Bournemouth-Derby train.

The photo can be seen at: http://www.44422.co.uk/nene_valley.html

I will update as and when info is available from the organiser :)

  2. Looking forward to this event!

BTW there was no tunnel at Masbury - but nice pic all the same

Many thanks for this . Date in the Diary and i am tempted by this

Hope you don't mind me asking but is there any chance of the nameplates coming off 73050 that day . It's not a showstopper for me but a nice to have if possible . I think and especially if you have another relevant S&D visitor that you have scope for a weekend rather than just a day

I'll have a look through my collection for relevant train reporting numbers for 4F Std 5 combo's as well

Thanks for the thought & effort in getting this together.
It might be confusing to visitors, but will the four stations be renamed for the day please? Wansford to become Bournemouth and P'boro' to become Bath? Ferry Meadoew & Orton Mere to be Templecombe & Evercreech perhaps?
To try & complete the scene any chance in the bar please of being able to buy Weston's scrumpy (plenty of orchards south of Bath) or Hall & Woodhouse Badger Ales (brewed in Blandford Forum).

The organisers already seem to be doing a grand job and actually responding to the request to remove the nameplates is a real indication of the desire to please people. Whilst it would be nice to rename the stations I suspect there would be a lot of work involved. I wonder if the WSR still have their station name boards that were used during the S&D gala in 2006. A friendly phone call and someone with a large van/lorry would be needed though.
Is it possible to make this a weekend event? It does seem to be capturing people's imagination and this sort of event can only be good news for the NVR.
I shall be there for sure and lets hope it's a successful venture for the railway.
Now, what about a photo charter, Martin?

    Best wishes,

    Paul

    Hi All

The event is a one off day at the moment, but subject to the event in april another may be arrnaged towards the end of the season, with other attractions, it is hoped at this time that the bar will be stocking somerset themed drinks, station names are being explored, but as mentioned, time and work is the key, vintage bus with somerset route indciators are being explored,

as always work in progress, but willing to look at requests

    P Roe

Looks a good event which I will try to make (or a linked charter). About time I revisited the Far East and Pboro will be enroute.

A small point though, the train was 'The Pines Express'. In the last few weeks via the S&D in July/Aug 1962 it did carry a 'Pines Express' headboard but this was a WR style headboard. Otherwise the only other time it carried a headboard on the S&D was a Southern square 'The Pines Express' version in 1953. This only lasted a few weeks as it couldn't be carried on the 2F pilots. This is all confirmed by Ivo Peters in his S&D volumes.

Fair few 4Fand 5MT combos but the only one I can read the headcode on is 44422 and 73051 on 995 (carried on left bracket with black headlamps) Btol-Bmouth Adex on Easter Monday 1957.

    Cheers,

If they still brew it then Cottage Brewing's Somerset & Dorset Ale would seem to be the most suitable.
