With bridge 30 being replaced, what's the state of other bridges along the line?

Put simply, the stone arch bridges are largely fine whilst metal bridges will tend to need work if they haven't already been replaced.

This year will see work to Bridge 18 just south of Newtondale Halt (the beck bridge on the curve) undertaken in house by the PWay team.

The next major bridge needing work is Bridge 27, the 3 track bridge at Goathland Station. This bridge was built at at a similar time to the Bridge 30 stregthening just over 100 years ago. It was always known this would need tackling within 5 years of Bridge 30 but we have had a couple of extra years out of Bridge 30 and Bridge 27 has deteriorated slightly more rapidly so major work is quite imminent.

3 Bridges near Levisham were repalced with concrete decks in the 1970s and 1980s, Bridges 16 and 17 were replaced with culverts around the turn of the century and the main running line sides of Bridges 24 and 25 (which were originally to the same design as Bridge 30 but were rebuilt using orignal materials and the beams from Bridge 27 and Bridge 28 at Darnholme around 1906) were strengthened. These and Bridge 27 are much larger than almost all the other metal structures but only Bridge 30 of the metal bridges is in such a remote location and so high above the river.

The other major project after Bridge 27 will be Bridge 7 in Pickering Station, which has 2 spans for no obvious reason! The Mill Race only runs under one span! Thoughts are currently to fill one span (subject to Environment Agency Approval) and possibly 3 track the other one to provide a longer siding.

This is all going to be a continued major expense - Bridges 27 and 7 will probably cost as much between them as Bridge 30 is costing, although Nigel Trotter, the NYMR Civial Engineer assures me any other deck renewals (and some smaller bridges will need renewing) will be "only" about £100k to renew!
